Destination Evaluation Worksheet

Picture the white sand beaches and bright turquoise water of a palm-fringed paradise. Point the way, you say? Two special spots in Mexico, Cancún and Cozumel, both offer such an Eden to honeymooners.

What should I know about Cancún?
Cancún sits at the tip of the Yucatan peninsula, Mexico's 14-mile long “panhandle.” The history of this area is rich and may still be appreciated with a visit to the Mayan and Aztec ruins.

Cancún enjoys an annual average temperature of 80 F. Summer is a good time to visit because the Gulf and Caribbean coasts of Mexico stay relatively cool due to the trade winds. Expect the most rain in April and May, and from September through January.

What is there to do in Cancún?

You'll probably want to spend a lot of time with your spouse, relaxing and enjoying the weather. But for those moments that you get bursts of energy and want to experience Cancún, there's plenty to do:

  • Snorkeling: The best place to go is Isla Mujeres, about 10 miles from Cancún. You can take a day or night cruise to the island, or hop on a quick water taxi. The most gorgeous beach on the islands is Playa Norte.

  • Viewing the ruins: Become inspired by Tulum, the only Mayan city built on the sea, about 80 miles south of Cancún. If you're a true history buff, travel to Chichén Itzá, the famous pyramid-shaped temple about three hours away, or other ancient ruins.

  • Shopping: Craft, jewelry and duty-free shops abound in Cancún. Also, don't pass up the outdoor markets, but be prepared to bargain. Start by offering half the asking price and work your way up from there.

What should I know about Cozumel?

Compared to bustling Cancún, Cozumel is relatively quiet. Most of that can be attributed to the fact that only 3 percent of this 28-mile-long island has been developed. This snorkeling paradise is located 12 miles off the tip of the Yucatan Peninsula.

You'll find the best weather in Cozumel from November through April. Showers can plague many a day from May through October. Don't forget hurricane season, either. That's from September to October.

What can we do in Cozumel?

If you're looking for a slower pace, Cozumel is the place. Slower doesn't necessarily mean boring, though.

  • Diving: It's no wonder Cozumel is known as Mexico's premier diving destination, with its 30 charted reefs and a variety of dive tours.
  • Wildlife watching: Chankanaab Nature Park will lure in all nature-lovers. At Chankanaab, which means “small sea,” visitors can explore the park's wildlife sanctuary, botanical garden and archaeological park. You can also snorkel or dive in underwater caves, reefs and a bay that houses a sunken ship.

  • Either one of these destinations will provide you with wonderful memories of your honeymoon to cherish for a lifetime. Whether you prefer a slow-paced trip focused upon nature or partying until dawn, the Yucatan Peninsula has it all.
